Muizenberg beachfront project has reached an important milestone
The City of Cape Town is pleased to announce that the Muizenberg beachfront project has reached an important milestone with the opening of the St James Walkway and the newly refurbished western parking area. Visitors can now also access the western side of the beach from Surfer’s Corner. The project is on track with the bulk of the work to be completed by the builders’ break in December.
‘The festive season is around the corner and I’m sure locals and visitors to the Muizenberg beachfront will be super excited to hear that we are now in the final phase of the upgrade project. Earlier this morning, we celebrated a massive milestone with the opening of the beach access to the St James Walkway at Surfer’s Corner.
‘The newly-paved parking area on the western side, next to the railway line, is now also available to the public and will bring great relief to those who visit the beach on busy days. The upgraded parking area has a paved surface, similar to the rest of the beachfront, new kerbing that contains recycled plastic, benches, and streetlights that will be switched on once the project has been completed.

‘Universal access parking and pedestrian walkways are also incorporated in the parking area. I’m extremely proud of the project management team who has made great progress over the past few weeks to ensure that most of the work will be done by mid-December,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning, Alderman Eddie Andrews.
- The refurbishment of the Muizenberg beachfront entails replacing the aged seawalls and major upgrades to public amenities.
- The project commenced on site in February 2025 and is over 84% complete.

What is happening on site:
- The old, degraded, sandstone and other old seawalls have been demolished, and where applicable, the stones will be re-used as part of the new landscape design and playground, as well as stone cladding of the foundation reinforcement wall on the western side and seating at the station forecourt
- The contractor is busy with the construction of the new central ablution facility, whereafter the roofing will commence
- The refurbishment of the Shark Spotters and Adaptive Surfing buildings is nearing completion, and the buildings are almost ready for the first coat of paint
- The remaining sections of the dilapidated seawall are being removed; and work on the final portion of the stepped revetment is progressing well
- Construction of the pergola and other landside structures, planters and seating wall are ongoing; and work on the playground area has commenced.
- The contractor has placed about 85% of the precast step and promenade units, which will provide coastal protection while also providing beach access at varied levels. Most of the steps will be below beach level and invisible to visitors as it will be buried under sand under normal conditions.

‘I want to thank the business community, local residents, and those who frequently visit Muizenberg for your patience, support, and cooperation over the past 20 months or so. There has been a lot of noise, movement, and machinery on site, and this work is having an impact on beach access in particular. Thank you for enduring the inconvenience and frustrations. This is a mammoth project, but we are nearly there and are as excited to see the upgrades and improvements concluded. These will ensure Muizenberg remains one of Cape Town’s top beach destinations for generations to come,’ said Alderman Andrews.
